Your Window on the World

There's an old story about a man who was traveling across the country.  He had been on the road driving all night long and was tired, but more importantly, he was really hungry for breakfast.  For several hours he had passed road signs for Ma's Kettle.   The signs boasted that they offered the best breakfast in town and one had to try their delicious chicken tongues. He thought chicken tongues sounded rather strange, but the signs were so intriguing that he knew he had to check it out.

He finally pulled into the town and located Ma's Kettle -- his mouth was salivating at the thought of something yummy.  He sat down into his booth and when the waitress come over he asked about the most decadent item on the menu.  The wiatress replied, of course, that it had to be the chicken tongues.  He couldn't fathom that this was true so he asked the fellow at the next table over about it.  Sure enough, the guy said that the chicken tongues were deliecious!  He couldn't believe it and he asked the waitress if she was sure.

"Yes", she replied.  "Our chicken tongues are simply the best.   You must try them."

The man thought for a minute and finally he said, "As much as you recommend them, I simply cannot fathom eating something that comes out of a chicken's mouth.  Just bring me some eggs, will you?!"

Ahhhhh, and I think we all know what part of the chickne the eggs come from, eh?

It's the same with you and me and our perceptions.  Our attitude is the lens through which we see the world.

If you ever wonder how critical your attitude is, just ask a medical doctor what the one thing you can do when you are ill to improve your chances of getting well.  He or she will tell you that your outlook on life is critical.  I recently spent some time up at the hospital with a firned who is going through chemo treatments.  She slept a good deal of the time and I watched people.  It was warming to see how the folks -- doctors, nurses, volunteers and patients -- were all working together to make the experice the best it could be under the circumstances.

Think about an area of your life that could use some healing or a different way of looking at it.  What's out of whack?  What stories do you tell yourself about this situation?  Is anything clouding your thinking?  I invite you to look at these things squarely in the eye and plan on doing some radical window cleaning on your world.

A coach is someone who tells you what you don't want to hear, who has you see what you don't want to see, so you can become who you have always known you could be.  ~ Tom Landry
