ISSN: 1530-4334 I received many warm notes from the special broadcast I sent out called The Awakening by Mark Nepo. His writing is incredible and I am totally enthralled with his thoughts. He is simply amazing! As The Awakening is such a powerful piece, it will be posted on my website under the page entitled FEATURE ARTICLE. Please be sure to visit and read it again and to share with others. With Love, Anyone who knows me well knows that I adore this time of year. It's not just the cooler temperatures or the beauty in the changing leaves -- it's college football time! :) And not only that, this year we also have the 2000 Olympics. This is one time of year when I actually DO reach for the remote -- the spirit of competition is much too intriguing to miss! Over the course of the next month, we will see some amazing people competing for the gold. We'll witness victories by milliseconds or millimeters. We'll learn about the journey to Sydney and hear personal stories of the athletes. We'll come to know many of them by their first names and by their smiles or tears. Have you ever wondered how Olympians remain so focused and true to their goals? Sure, they have passion and a spirit to compete, but what else do they have? The truth is that the very same principles that make athletic champions can also make you a champion in the course of your life. Here are some marks of a true champion -- 1. Champions don't go it alone. They have coaches, trainers, and a host of other people who are there to support them. Look at Lance Armstrong, the Tour de France winner. In his book, It's Not About the Bike, he shares how he fought back from cancer and, with the support of many others, won that grueling bike race. Even Michael Jordan, the most celebrated player in the history of the NBA, had both a coach and a team who he relied upon. Don't go it along. The Lone Ranger is a myth. Ask for and get the support you need to make your dreams come true. If you want to learn more about partnering with a coach, just ask me. I HAVE a coach, I AM a coach and coaching works! 2. Champions take full responsibility for their
lives and are not victims. Tonya continues to blame her problems on everyone from her ex-husband to her bodyguard to her parents. We won't be seeing her skate much in the future. Oksana, who, by the way, doesn't even have parents, went into rehabilitation, made her apologies and changed the way she lives. Look to see her touring the country with other professional skaters. Take responsibility. You are responsible for the choices you have made in your life. Don't be a victim. 3. Champions make hard work their passion.
The name of the game is You can't always be the most talented person, but
you can be the most 4. Champions have a winning attitude. How many little kids dream of being up on those platforms and hearing their national anthem played? Each athlete has visualized this over and over in their minds. They also perceive themselves as winners and as victors in their competition. They have faith in themselves. Sports psychologists work with athletes continually to get them to actually "see" (by visualization) themselves winning their event before it ever even takes place. In his book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey calls this "beginning with the end in mind." Envision your success! You can do it! Do you see yourself on your platform? 5. Champions handle loss with grace. The best
example of this in recent Is he a champion or what?! We can't all be on the platform each time and we can't always control what happens, but we can control how we handle it. This is a valuable lesson to teach our kids in a time when winning can be at all costs. Falling down is not always graceful, but there is, indeed, grace in falling. The bottom line is that sometimes you learn more from losing than from winning. There you have it -- the stuff that makes
champions. What do you need to do to take a step toward being a champion in your
life? Begin to implement these changes today and see what happens. Resources You Can Use It's Not About the Bike, by Lance Armstrong. Powerful and moving. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by
