ISSN: 1530-4334 Welcome to the new subscribers! Please help me reach my goal of 1000 readers and pass this newsletter to anyone who might be interested. As always, you have my gratitude! With Love, How do you complete this sentence? "Anything worth doing is worth doing __________." My guess is that most of you completed that sentence with the word "well." Anything worth doing is worth doing well. I'd like to challenge the thinking on that and
invite you to change the We often have the tendency to stop ourselves when we are uncertain of an outcome. We let our fears get in our way and risk seems too high of a price to pay. We don't want to look silly, feel dumb, be vulnerable, etc. We want an assurance that we are going to be just fine. When that guarantee doesn't come, we become paralyzed with fear. This is a learned behavior. Have you ever watched a baby learning to walk? Can you picture him in your minds eye? The little baby (with a much too heavy diaper on!) starts by getting one leg up, holding on to something for support. Eventually he is able to steady himself and pull himself up. And then what happens? Well, I have yet to see a little one take off walking across the room! You know what happens. He falls right on his butt. Boom! And what do babies do then (beside occasionally cry a little)? Why, they go right back to making another attempt to live life in a vertical world. They do it all over again. Along the way, don't you agree, that they look pretty silly, dumb and vulnerable? [OK, they look really cute too, but that is beside the point.] :) Can you imagine if, as babies, we let our fear stop us from getting up again? We'd all be living a challenging life from the ground floor perspective! The great hockey player, Wayne Gretzky, reminds us that we miss 100% of the shots we don't take. Life requires risk. Most of us have a fear of the unknown and of
failure. When we become I went to Japan last week with a good
friend. It was nothing but pure We felt vulnerable getting on a bus and going to Mount Fuji. When people starting jumping off the bus before it had even come to a full stop to use the restroom (and the rest rooms are an entirely different story not fit for print here!!!), we were naturally a bit confused. We rode the bus, subways and trains with little assistance from anyone. We arranged our own personal tours ourselves. We took a day trip a couple of hours away to a beach in Kamakura and sat in a hut 'people watching' for most of the afternoon. We explored the fish markets and ate unknown (to us) sushi. We visited temples, shrines, and gardens, as well as every major part section in Tokyo. I am sure we looked silly, vulnerable, and perplexed a great deal during our week there. I imagine a few people may have had a chuckle at us and a few may have been offended at our obvious ignorance regarding cultural differences. I am sure we did Japan rather poorly by the Japanese standards, but we did it! And you know what? I wouldn't have let fear of the unknown stop me for anything. It was pure adventure from the beginning to the end! It was something wonderful to add to the list of things that make us unique and justa little braver when faced with uncertainty. It was an extraordinary time and I am grateful for the opportunity to go as well as thankful that I expanded my comfort zone just bit more. Is anything stopping you? Are you scared? You are not alone. We all have been. There is not a person dead or alive who hasn't had the fears anduncertainties that you have. The people you find most interesting or admire, however, are probably the ones who worked through the fears and took great risks. There is no failure. There may be other paths to take and we each have to find our way on the ones that are best suited for us. Sometimes we are lostand it takes several attempts. Remember that anything worth doing is worth doing poorly at first. And, the only failure is in not trying and in notgrowing. I promise you that life is much more rewarding
from outside of the comfort zone. And so, whatever your mountains are, I urge you to
climb and conquer them. And when you do, please let me know so that we can
celebrate! I am cheering you on! One simple way to help you step through your fears is to visualize backwards. Close your eyes and get quiet. Now, imagine yourself having felt your fear but working through it anyhow. You have achieved your goal! What does that look like? How do you feel? No matter what the results of your actions are you will feel empowered, confident and will have grown. Now, can you make this a reality? RISK To laugh is to risk appearing the fool To weep is to risk appearing sentimental To reach out for another is to risk involvement To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self To place your ideas, your dreams before the crowd is to risk their loss To love is to risk not being loved in return To live is to risk dying To hope is to risk despair To try is to risk failure But risks must be taken because the greatest
hazard in life is to risk The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing and is nothing They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they
cannot learn, feel, change, Chained by their certitudes, they are a slave,
they have forfeited their Only a person who risks is free. Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, by Susan
